I like sysgate very very user friendly    as far as zone alarm  i hate the resources it takes up.  This forum and another site i help on  i could shwo time after time the promblems with zone alarm , same goes with mccaffee and norton.

Outpust never used it yet i 've been meaning to try it out  heard alot of good things,   for example   my one friend zone alrm  took a dump on him, he tried sygate it gave him some werid resaults with using mirc he tried outpost and loved it.

MSN Messenger i foun this about the ports  it does say disable firewall when using msn.

(Watch Out! Opens a wide port range!)
NOTE: Shut off any personal firewall programs such as BlackIce, ZoneAlarm, etc.
Ports 6891-6900 enable File send,
Port 6901 is for voice communications
Allows Voice, PC to Phone, Messages, and Full File transfer capabilities.
Thnx to Brad King & Bill Finch Jr.

I would suggest Sygate as well. easy to use and light on resources.

If you are on 56K I really woukdn't even worry with a firewall.

Simply said

Sygate Simple to use easy to uninstall if needed
Outpost a little more to do but just as simple if you use the defaults
Seems to do more than Sygate but both give good protection
Outpost has its user friendly support forum

ZoneAlarm in a nice way S U C K s
If you need to uninstall ZA it will give you all sorts of problem
from locking up network drivers to having to edit your registry just to get back online.. If your lucky you wont need to reinstall it to have to get back online to work on getting it off
ZA also has a leak in it.. In otherwords its free for crackers..
In ZAs defence they have allot of documentation to help with the removal
ZA as posted above is a resource pig as well
Outpost - Agnitum has been around the longgest when it comes to building firewalls..

If your new to Firewalls use the Sygate to start then graduate to Outpost
