Thermaltake Case (upgrading)
« on: March 25, 2005, 10:19:02 pm »
We're doing some upgrading to our systems

When I start transfering over our RAID to this new case we'll take some pictures and comments on the hows and even see if maybe we can all improve on whats being done

The RAID config is a RAID 5 with one spare drive
We're adding one more spare with an external USB2 and internal slave
All running on Win2003 server with IIS MS-Sql Apache and MySQL on a AMD
The Server is kept in the Dungeon so noise levels arent a issue...

The case above can hold up to 10 drives but isnt nessassary. Later don the road we're gonna upgrade the network from a Gigabyte to a added layer and extended wireless from the wireless we have now..
But the networking is for another thread

This mess or so called mess that started as an experment is being moved into bigger cases

The machines left and right have been exposed to almost everything and still run stable..
The machine on the left will be the first one to be moved into a new case.. IT's not a power house it just runs..
ITs on the same 200watt power supply that the case came with 5 years ago.. ITs powered by 1 gig of Ram and a P3 1GHz
It handles all of our email and additional file storage along with 50 FTP accounts.

The one on the Right is the RAID that will go in the case above.. More on that when we get started on the moves..
AND no the machines wont be staying on that Ugly old Power Saw bench once there in the New Cases..
Hopefully they wont be exposed to Sawdust and other Ugly things in the future...

There was a long discussion before even showing that mess..

Here's the P3 just before it gets torn into
The machine needs a bigger powersupply the old one is ready to die after 5 years of great service.
It has a Gig of Ram
1 Gigabyte NIC(network card)
USB2 PCI card.
one maxtor 30 gig boot drive
one 80gig IBM the machine is used for our email and Faxes with some file storage

This is the new Case I feal like putting bumper stickers on it.. wasnt a bad case to work with Just about everything pops in and out.

The Harddrives
The case has room for 6 harddrives and 5. 5 1/4 drives up top
Fans mount directly in front of the drives to help cool them. Since theres only two drives at this point. I droped the drives in seperate drive brackets with seperate fans.. Similar to this below Want to keep it as cold as possible

Just about complete with the 550W Power supply up top

Here it is up and running complete..

Total time 40 minutes for the swap out...

This last one is a bonus
It shows how bad the Dirt and dust really was in the Duneon

The RAID 5 swap out is next which wont be 40 minutes.. More like 2 hours
I'll have more info on that one as I go

where is the cisco junk??
Around the corner on the wall..
ITs called a Zonet-Cisco Gigabyte Switch on the last layer of a Gigabyte network running on 700Mhz Cat6 Grey Cable..
I dont think Cisco makes cable do they.. esp in Designer Grey  ;D
OHH and the Zonet-Cisco is uplinked to a Netgear-Cisco Gigabyte switch. Which is uplinked to two routers one is a DLink-Cisco-wifi and the other is a Zonet-Cisco-Wifi all going and coming
I guess by Definition "Cisco Junk" might own the world at least right now.. China has other idea's. I guess it better calling my Router a Zonet-Cisco then a Seamens-zonet...
Im probably gonna upgrade to the NEW Cisco-Edimax router soon. As seen here. http://www.edimax.com/html/english/products/PRI682.htm

WE Sometimes take for ganted that our users have hardware skills so we're trying to get hardware help going  ;)
Added comments welcome AND yes a single P3 can make a great server with the right parts..
They run cooler and drain the pocket less and a great way for a home user to store files of all types including music/video's/document's
