Need help with Avira and DSL connection.
« on: August 01, 2010, 09:03:57 am »
Hi guys,
I have Verizon DSL 3mb/768 plan. I just purchased Avira Premium Security Suite. When I run a tracert I am getting timeouts.
  1     1 ms     *       <1 ms  192.168.1.1
  2     9 ms     *        9 ms  10.6.11.1
  3     9 ms     *        9 ms  so-0-1-0-0.PITT2-CORE-RTR1.verizon-gni.net [130.
81.13.17]
  4    19 ms     *       15 ms  as2-0.LCC1-RES-BB-RTR1-RE1.verizon-gni.net [130.
81.20.92]
  5    14 ms     *       15 ms  0.ae1.BR2.IAD8.ALTER.NET [152.63.34.21]
  6    15 ms     *       15 ms  ten12-1.br03.ash01.pccwbtn.net [63.218.92.61]
  7    66 ms     *       15 ms  ge13-4.br01.ash01.pccwbtn.net [63.218.44.141]
  8    15 ms     *       15 ms  akamai.ge13-4.br02.ash01.pccwbtn.net [63.218.94.
142]
  9    15 ms     *       16 ms  a72-247-108-79.deploy.akamaitechnologies.com [72
.247.108.79]

Trace complete.

Is this normal? Also when I run speed tests I am getting whacky results like 37mb/.73.Anyone know anything I could try? Also, could someone provide me with some cablenut settings?I like cablenut better than TCP Optimizer.
Thanks!

If you're getting systematic packet loss and poor upload speed, I would contact the provider. I recommend the speed-test here: www.speedtest.net/mini.php

I have did some more research I uninstalled Avira, and the problem was gone. Then I decided to go with Microsoft Security Essentials, and Private Firewall. As soon as I installed Private Firewall the timeouts were back. Also, I noticed the slow speeds. I was only getting 1mb/.30kb. Is there a firewall that I can use that will not slow my internet speeds to a crawl? This seams to be the problem.

As you can see with no firewall.

C:\Documents and Settings\Rocky>tracert www.verizon.net

I would recommend using Windows Firewall, for a software solution. I'm not sure what Operating System you are running, but here is a step-by-step using Windows XP:

I am using windows xp as this is a gaming pc. I like to run xp on it becuase it is lighter, and easier on rescources. There isn't a better firewall than the windows firewall that I can use that will not slow my internet down? I don't understand why someone would want to use a 3rd part firewall if it would limit there internet speed. Therefor, there has to be some time of work around. Can someone privide me with some more info on this?
Thanks,
Rocky
