Title: Acer ASPIRE REVO - Report

Recently I had been going threw and looking at the NEW EEE Type computers.
ASUS and the Acer
Both are real similar.
The ASUS comes equip with the same amount of memory with more options.
They both run on the Warm side. Which concerns me since I have a warm area we're gonna run this in it might be possible melt down the GPU over time. Im not to concerned with heat in this for the CPU since its a Intel Atom and Intel has the heat issue under control.

Both systems come with the Atom CPU

Both run at about 20 Watts draw so its not gonna break the bank on the Electric bill like our big servers here can.
neither the ASUS or the Acer came with a Optical drive (DVD /BlueRay)
Both are HDMI equip.
Both have a external SATA
Both have the same overloaded junk software loaded like McAffee Security and Games
Im not a Giant Game player but both are loaded with Games..

I opted for the ACER for a few reasons
it has 6 available USB ports. (ASUS = 4)
ACER has a VGA port and HDMI2 port which makes connecting to a LCD 50 inch Sony TV simple. or the possibility of connecting dual monitors simple. We have NOT tried duals on this yet.
It didnt have the Wireless connection built into the Case like the Asus increasing heat (USB Wireless cards are cheap now)
The ASUS was $60 US more in price. More people are having heat related problems with the ASUS as well.
Overall size of the ACER and ASUS are about the same and smaller then a WII from Apple/MAC
You can get a External DVD/BlueRay and even an External Notebook drive to make a Clone backup of the ACER which is something I will be doing soon.
I always clone the Drives of all our computers its more reliable and the Downtime is minimal. Not to mention its simple to swap the harddrive in the ACER or the ASUS.

The first thing I did was to check the heat in this since allot of websites have shown they run around 40 to 70C or in this case ours is about the middle range
Here's where I drive everyone in the world nuts Cause Im gonna give the heat ranges in Fahrenheit and not the big C

These Temps were checked and tested with SpeedFan from the almico website http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php)
If you run this program I cannot be held responsible for it and there are plenty disclaimers at the website. But if you just want readings on the system its a fast great FREE product..  

Here's the Temps
GPU 133 F Nvidia combined Gforce
CPU 109 to 122F Intel Atom
Local Temp 102 to 105F
Remote 2 Temp 115F
HD Temp 102 to 110F (hard drive)
Temp 1 = 133F
Core 0 = 108 to 120F
Core 1 = 108  to 120F
Core = 128 to 133 and sometimes a touch higher.
 
The Hard Drive installed is a Hitachi HTS543216L9A300 Firmware installed FB2OC40C
Motherboard is made by MSI and marked as ACER as youll see in the full report below for the people are intrested and can read it..
The NVidia Gforce uses 128meg of shared memory over the 1Gig of 6400 meg memory installed.

I ran the tests running Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy along with Avira all scanning at the same time.
The fun part was that CPU usage never went above 70% and the Best part was that the FAN in the system at 2582 RPM Was real quiet and the Temperatures started to drop.. Im not a BIG Gamer but most people are saying it works out ok..

I'll post that in the second thread (It's a little long)
So you understand the CPU-Z report is very very long and I did take out about half.. Most of you including myself will skip past certain items. But I always try to include as much as possible.

The ACER for its size and even with the TEMPS being a little warm Will end up running in a Marina doing the Inventory/looking up parts and the occasion to print out reports.. Marina's can be ugly in the repair area's and this place isnt perfect but the Average Temp in the Workshop durring Summer will be around 82 Degree's F...
Space is limited So I will probably mount it to the back of the Monitor with my custom bracket..
Acer has a bracket you can buy for just that.. or was it asus ;D

But your comment on the warm factor would scare me as how would something like that survive in the south's hot and humid enviroment. Heck we can even keep cool puters from getting hot. Anytime I hear warm I think about wiring to small to handle the current going throught it. Since CPU's are finely connected dios then it would be a concern for a short life.

But I like the Ideal behind the concept. Something like that would fit well in a whole house cat 5 wiring set up even if it does have wireless.

I might want to mention this..
Theyve been having problems with Driver updates.. A new driver will install and the audio will stop.. or a NIC will fragment.
The work around for updating drivers is to uninstall the driver and the related software.

BIOS as far as I know it hasnt been available for an update... AND i it does come available...... which one would you use the ACER or MSI bios update.. So I'll hold off on that for a bit...

The heat seemed to drop a touch esp. under the load I had on it today using HULU that was early this morning.
The video wasnt great (choppy)till I set Adobe Flash to use HARDWARE acceleration and bumped the cache to max..
Im not 100% that part of that problem was with the new Firefox.. So we'll see..

HEAT again: the HEAT to the CPU isnt real bad in fact a Intel Atom can handle 70C which is pretty warm.. On the other hand I have had this thing running in a 73Degree F room and in most offices it should do ok..
Most of the Tests done (by others) on this thing was to heat it up and it kept up at about 65 to 70C
Having that type of heat on the Hard drive might lower the life on that and its a big reason that I make clones of the original drive (using Acronis)
Buggy try to keep in mind the Mother board is about 8 inches by 8 inches its different engineering where resistance levels arent displaced as much as the big old boards and its not a old style AMD... I tested a P4 about 3 hours before I remembered to plugged in the fan

Im gonna let ASUS Eee box and ACER Revo work out there issue with Drivers and see where it takes it..
When I deliver this one to the nice dirty marina I'm thinking about getting one of these for the 40 inch Insignia TV and one to connect to the TV.. The object is really to be able to bring down the Electric Costs over all and still be able to surf get email and work.. with an occasional movie ;D

I didn't see a Fan setting in the bios and will look next time I reboot.
I did add a Wireless USB Hawking-tech card to a with a USB hub and disabled the internal  NIC threw Windows and will try to disable the NIC in bios just to see if it makes a difference in the heat. Then I'll take a look to see if that fan has a higher RPM it can run at. Right now the FAN seems ok and real quiet at 2556rpm. Not sure if it can be pushed to 3000rpm and if it was able to will that have a negitive affect on the fan.
Remember there's no Fan on the CPU and only on the GPU. Intel has done a great job on not needing a fan for years. I wouldnt want to run some of the Bigger CPU's from Intel that way, they slow down as they get warmer.. The 233 1.5 Atom seems to like the heat.
Since my original post the Temp's have gone down a touch and that might be that the MSI/ACER motherboard finally burnt in..

The version of Linux you worked with is considered a very stripped out version I think I woulda tryed a something different considering most of the hardware if not all the hardware is supported by other flavors of linux...

This week I'll be packing this thing up to test in a couple offices and take to a satillite office to see how well it VPN's in accross town to another bloated office.
From there its probably gonna make its 3way to its home at the Marina..

If I get lucky I can order a few of these before the prices go up some more.. My personal; opinion is you can get a lot of machine out of off lease or refurbished machines that might just blow this thing away for the price.. BUT the object is to save space and lower the electric bill..

Most bigger Desktops will average a 60 to 80 Watt draw.. This is 20 Watts and the fact that it can be hung on the back of a monitor helps reduce the space and wires on the floor

The Fan has two settings in bios.. Auto which is what I'm leaving it at. and disable to run at full speed.
The Automatic setting will probably add life to the fan itself and when the system inactive its slowed to about 35% thats more then likely why the heat starts to drop during a load.

With the Video set to turn off in 10 minutes 15 for the harddrive and standby mode about 15 or 20 it works out that the system probably only gets the higher temps when everything first spins up.

Im gonna go dig threw the Dungeon to see what type of optical drives I have sitting around and pop it in an external case.
hopefully I have a Good DVD/RW I can run a movie threw it and monitor the system with..

Flash wasnt as friendly threw the newest firefox but did work once I changed settings noted above.. Im pretty sure a DVD would work well.

Maybe before I get this thing outta here I can take some pictures but there's tons of pictures out there. The only thing that there isnt allot of is the small keyboard they send with it.... more like a laptop keyboard..

I wonder how trickey those are to take apart maybe you can add some more compound to gpu and cpu.   

Hope is well  on your end don't ask about mine i won't tell you anyway...

One screw and pull back the cover.....
I'm sure there's plenty of compound...

I decided to utilize the windows power setting a little different.. For me anyway..
I have the Video shutting down after 20 minutes, HD after 25 and Standby at 35 minutes..
I let it sit for 45 minutes then brought it out of standby and the system was up right away by just hitting the power button..
Temps at that point where room temp..
Now I turned off standby and brought it back up and the Temps where more like a normal unit till the program SpeedFan added its little load and that brought the temps up to the point of the first post..

Right now I I decided to try hibernate with standby disabled just to see what it will do.. So I'll chk on that in an hour

With one of these I can use it mounted to the back of the TV and take the 17inch laptop to the other house and put the 15inch laptop in the bag for service work where it belongs.. Gonna Try this on a Mitsubishi 1080i projection TV downtown for someone this week and buy two more.. Maybe one ASUS and the ACER for the Mitsu TV if it works... This one will still goto the marina..
The 2 ACER for here and the ASUS for down there if all works.. Then maybe 5 of these foer an office.. So its just getting past the HEAT and teaching people to keep there mits off the power settings..

OHH I also tryed Testing the clone yesterday and it blue screened.. I have to rebuild the Clone.. Which means setting the Bios to SATA IDE.. It was BSOD in SAFE Mode right at the Video setting. and woulkd reboot..
Its also seeing the USB drive as a Drive in bios instead of a Removable USB which could be the real problem when it trys to power up..
Without being able to make bootable/running clones I refuse to use these...So I'm still digging

AS for having Optical drives you dont need one on a network.. Its called share out the drive from another machine

Hibernate works but still a pain in the butt So I re-enabled Standby to a 4 hour setting and Video off after 15min and HD off at 20min
It returns to the desktop faster then hibernate.. Hibernate took an extra 10 seconds to get outta the sleep mode..
Temps in both cases dropped the same...

In an office I would get all sorts of complaints about them bringing it outta standby if it was set to much less then that..

Now I gotta figure out the Clone issue.. Seems Acronis 7 server edition that can clone a RAID has problems with certain SATA setups..
I really don't want to add to the Cloning process with a BARTPE disk.. So gonna go see if there's a update that will take the SATA drivers OR the other option may be to boot to safe mode and start the clone prosess from there.. Either way I gotta put the SATA drive in IDE compatibility mode

Yeah I know this post was worthless without pictures ;D

Anyway Flash is spotty when running a movie unless you put the cache to maximum and use full hardware acceleration.
I actually downsized the shared memory in the bios to 64meg which seemed to speed up applications a touch and didnt seem to hurt the video.. This unit came with 1 gig of ram and the video set to auto at a 128 meg used for graphics.. Now its set to 64meg shared..
That didnt seem to hurt movies.. But I can see a gamer having a issue or two dropping it.
The bios at least in this one will allow you to run at 512 shared and if you add a gig of memory would be ok.
The Nvidia Geforce seems to work well with games as far as what my son reported when we connected up a DVD and bumped the Graphics up... He 'd rather play his game on his intel with the 4 gig of Ram and ATI card ;D

The Good in this system is that its got plenty of ports.
The hard drive is ok at 5400 rpm and 160 gig
The heat dosnt seem to slow up the Intel Atom and the more load you put on it the cooler it runs.
boots up fast and has a recovery block of 15gig to recover the OS in case someone breaks it.
The Gigabyte NIC is fast and stable and works well at the auto setup from the driver.

The Downside is cost if you plan on toys..
The system with Windows XP is ok but..
To back it up I highly suggest a Optical Drive like a External DVD burner and possibly a USB external hard drive.. both storage and backup.. So plan on spending about a $100 more or less
I would also say you'd want to spend the money on a Good wireless card.
AND a wireless keyboard and mouse if your using it at home on a LCD TV
OR a Good Keyboard is you plan on using it at a desk.. The Factory keyboard is about the size of a laptop keyboard and feels like it..

All in all I'm happy with this system.. Its going in a place that has very little space for a full size machine.. Similar if your putting a computer at your TV/entertainment center.. So it works out well that way..

I do plan on buying two more along with a Refurbished box in the near future..
A full size Refurb with the right setup can work out just as well as long as you have the time to mess with it...

The ACER mentioned above is still running
It's Environment has been running in a Marina Cold Wet or HOT.
Its on 24/7 and is used to update inventory and day to day communications
The Temp ranges I was concerned have never been a problem
